Tint film comparison · MarxModified, Wilmington, DE

GeoShield vs 3M window tint.

3M is the most recognized name in window film. GeoShield is the film we install. Here’s how they compare on heat, clarity, shades, warranty and price, using each maker’s own published numbers.

We’ll be upfront: MarxModified AutoStyling is a GeoShield installer, so we’re not a neutral referee. What we can do is put the numbers side by side, tell you where 3M is genuinely excellent, and explain why we still chose GeoShield for our customers in Wilmington, DE.

Both brands make good film. Neither will turn purple, and both block over 99% of UV. The real differences are in shade range, thickness, price, and what you get for the money.

The short answer

  • Heat rejection: close. 3M Crystalline and 3M Ceramic IR publish up to 95% to 99% infrared rejection on the film alone. GeoShield Apex Ultra Ceramic rejects about 95% of infrared heat in every shade. Both beat any carbon or dyed film by a wide margin.
  • Shades: GeoShield wins on range. Apex Ultra comes in 5%, 15%, 20%, 35%, 40%, 50% and 70%. 3M Crystalline’s darkest shade lets in about 21% of light, so there’s no limo-dark Crystalline. 3M Ceramic IR goes darker, from 6% to 78%.
  • Thickness: Apex Ultra is a 2 mil dual-layer film. Thicker film is easier to shape to curved rear glass and more forgiving over the years.
  • Warranty: both are lifetime for the original owner, installed by an authorized dealer.
  • Price: this is where it separates. A full ceramic tint at MarxModified is $300 to $450. Get a 3M Ceramic IR or Crystalline quote from a 3M dealer and compare.

How to read tint numbers before you compare

Every film maker reports heat a little differently, which is why one brand’s “95%” doesn’t always equal another’s.

  • IR rejection (IRR or SIRR) measures a narrow band of infrared, often around 900 to 1,050 nanometers, usually on the film alone. Numbers here run high: 90% to 99% for good ceramics.
  • IRER measures infrared across the full 780 to 2,500 nanometer range on film plus glass. Numbers run lower, often 60% to 75% for the same films.
  • TSER is total solar energy rejected: UV, visible light and infrared together. It rises as the film gets darker.

So compare IRR to IRR and TSER to TSER, and treat any brand’s single headline number as a starting point.

GeoShield figures from GeoShield’s Apex Ultra page and the C2 Carbon spec sheet. 3M figures from 3M’s U.S. automotive window film product pages and its personal auto window film comparison guide (January 2025). 3M’s IRR is measured on film alone at 900 to 1,000 nm; its IRER covers 780 to 2,500 nm. Figures change as makers update products, so check current spec sheets.

Where 3M is genuinely strong

Crystalline is a remarkable film. It uses a multilayer optical construction instead of dyes or metals, which is how it rejects so much heat while staying nearly clear. If you want the lightest possible tint with serious heat rejection, Crystalline 70 or 90 is one of the best options made. 3M also has the deepest brand recognition of any film company, and a very large dealer network.

Why we install GeoShield instead

  • Every shade gets the heat rejection. Apex Ultra rejects about 95% of infrared whether you pick 70% for a Pennsylvania-legal front window, 50% for Delaware’s front limit, or 5% in the back. You don’t pay for a top-tier film and then find out the dark shades perform differently.
  • The full shade range. Delaware lets you go as dark as you want behind the driver. Many of our customers want 5% or 20% in the back and a legal 50% up front, in the same film. 3M Crystalline can’t do the dark rear.
  • 2 mil thickness. Apex Ultra was thickened to 2 mil, which makes it easier to heat-shape to a curved rear window and more durable against scratches.
  • Price. GeoShield doesn’t spend what 3M spends on brand marketing, and that shows up in what we can charge. Full ceramic tint here is $300 to $450 with every price listed online.
  • A warranty that travels. GeoShield’s lifetime warranty covers discoloration, peeling, bubbling, adhesive failure, cracking, delaminating, oxidation and corrosion, and any authorized GeoShield dealer in the country honors it.

A 3M film installed with contamination under it, gaps at the edges and a seam in the rear glass will look worse in a year than a well-installed GeoShield film, and the reverse is true too. Whatever brand you choose, look at the shop’s finished cars up close. Here’s how we’d pick a tint shop, and here’s our work.

Which should you choose?

  • You want nearly clear glass with maximum heat rejection and price isn’t a factor: 3M Crystalline is a fine choice, and so is Apex Ultra 70.
  • You want a dark rear and a legal front in one film, with ceramic heat rejection throughout: GeoShield Apex Ultra.
  • You want the look and privacy at the best price: GeoShield C2 Carbon, from $200.

GeoShield vs 3M FAQ

Is GeoShield as good as 3M window tint?

On heat rejection the two brands’ ceramic films are in the same range, roughly 95% infrared rejection on comparable measurements, and both block over 99% of UV with a lifetime warranty. GeoShield Apex Ultra offers a wider shade range including 5%, is a thicker 2 mil film, and costs less installed.

Is 3M Crystalline worth the price?

If you want a very light tint with top heat rejection, it’s an excellent film. If you want a dark rear, Crystalline doesn’t go darker than about 21%, so you’d need a different film for the back.

Why is GeoShield cheaper than 3M?

Mostly marketing and distribution. GeoShield sells through professional installers without the advertising budget of a company like 3M. The film itself is a 2 mil dual-layer ceramic with a lifetime warranty.

Do you install 3M tint?

No. We install GeoShield only, so we know the film inside and out and can stand behind every job.

How much is GeoShield ceramic tint?

A full Apex Ultra Ceramic tint at MarxModified is $300 to $450 depending on the vehicle. C2 Carbon is $200 to $300.
